Elton John and I agree on Marriage and Civil Partnerships

ej1The other day I took a poll and in my blog I stated that I thought that California’s Proposition 8 failed because there are those who want to protect marriage as being between a man and a woman. There were comments explaining why the writers felt that marriage should be between any sex. I disagreed but it appeared that perhaps my idea of everyone making a compromise with unions that were between anyone besides a man and a woman could be called something else. Simple, yes. But evidently not satisfactory to those who commented.

I don’t always agree with things Elton John comes up with, but I think he stated it well when interviewed at Tuesday’s annual benefit for the Elton John AIDS Foundation held in New York.

“We’re not married. Let’s get that right. We have a civil partnership. What is wrong with Proposition 8 is that they went for marriage. Marriage is going to put a lot of people off, the word marriage.”

“I don’t want to be married. I’m very happy with a civil partnership. If gay people want to get married, or get together, they should have a civil partnership,” John says. “The word ‘marriage,’ I think, puts a lot of people off.

“You get the same equal rights that we do when we have a civil partnership. Heterosexual people get married. We can have civil partnerships.”

Perhaps everyone can’t have the same thing, or we don’t need the same thing. We women could protest that we want everything that men have – and then what in the heck would we do with urinals in our restrooms?
